HSBC's 'Vertical Rush' for Earth Hour

25 March 2010

Ever run up the stairs at work? On 23 March, dozens of plucky employees at HSBC’s London HQ (and a couple of the healthier WWF staff) took part in a special sponsored Earth Hour event – a ‘Vertical Rush’ – to help draw attention to climate change, and raise funds for WWF. It just involved sprinting up the stairs of their office block. But when you work in one of the tallest buildings in the UK, that’s no small achievement…

As part of HSBC’s Earth Hour Week, 30 HSBC staff – and two heroic WWF workers – sprinted up the 48 flights of stairs inside the HSBC Tower in London’s Docklands.

That’s a lung-dissolving 1,056 steps, for those of you who like to count these things (and we’re sure they counted every single step). The fastest times? An impressive 6 minutes and 59 seconds for the quickest man – we make that an average of about 2.5 steps every second! – and 9 minutes 5 seconds for the fastest woman. The event helped raise thousands of pounds for WWF's Earth Hour and tiger appeals.

Big thanks to everyone who got involved! Here are some pictures from the day, showing how the super-fit Vertical Rushers rose to the challenge…
