What are people doing for Earth Hour?

Switch off and support WWF’s Earth Hour

On Saturday 27 March 2010 at 8.30pm, we want a billion people around the world to switch off their lights for one hour – WWF’s Earth Hour - show you care about climate change.

Sign up to support people and wildlife threatened by climate change.

Keep checking back here for updates as we get nearer to the big day. And don’t forget to sign up to say you’re taking part, whatever you decide to do...

What did people do in 2009?

It’s not just about iconic buildings, of course – most activities will be smaller-scale, with the emphasis on having fun with friends. If you haven’t decided what to do yet, have a look at what some other people did last year:

  • dancing-by-candlelight class
  • loads of people blacked out their own websites for the hour using our special Earth Hour ‘light switch’ widget
  • candlelit baby massage
  • meditation in the dark
  • even if your office is closed on Saturday 27 March, you can still get involved in the spirit of things with an Earth "Lunch" Hour and switch off your computer for an hour during the day
  • torchlit hide-and-seek
  • shadow puppet show using candle lamps and cutout figures

By the way - if you’re an amateur photographer or film-maker, and would like to volunteer your services for the night of 27 March, we’d love to see your photos or footage of events from the evening (we can’t be everywhere ourselves!) – including, of course, some of the major switch-offs happening near you. If we like your images we’d like to include them in our official film of the event. Find out how to share your videos and images.
