Local Authorities, Beyond the Hour

Beyond the hour

WWF is striving to build what we call a ‘One Planet Future’ – where people and nature thrive within their fair share of the planet’s natural resources.

If we are to build a ‘One Planet Future’, change needs to happen not only at the level of big business and national government, but also in the places where we live and work, and in the way we live our lives as part of a community. Local government and communities can help make these changes happen.

You can:

Join WWF’s timber pledge campaign (if you haven’t already)

All local authorities buy wood and/or paper.  But only a handful check where it’s come from.  If you don’t, you could be supporting illegal or unsustainable logging which threatens forests, people and wildlife in developing countries. WWF is working with local authorities to help improve timber purchasing policies, awarding special WWF awards to those making progress on this issue.

Support WWF’s Livewell initiative

WWF’s work on sustainable diets has resulted in the Livewell initiative, which brings together environmental and health advice on food. As the tier of government closest to the public you can help individuals and communities to understand the benefits of a Livewell diet, promoting healthy, sustainable food that benefits both people and the planet. Furthermore, you can directly influence the make up and environmental impact of thousands of meals served each day by adopting Livewell friendly procurement policies.

Tell us your perspective on sustainable planning and development

WWF works with the government, businesses and communities to ensure that the planning system supports the delivery of economic, social and environmental priorities in both the short and long-term. Briefings on our work can be found here.

We believe that the Localism/Big Society agenda presents many opportunities, but also challenges, for local government in the future. We’re particularly interested in understanding how policy on sustainable development and living within environmental limits can be effectively implemented at the local level.

If you would be interested in providing useful case studies to inform the ongoing debate please email our Senior Planning Advisor, Emmalene Gottwald at egottwald@wwf.org.uk.

Please contact the Earth Hour team at earthhour@wwf.org.uk for further information or enquiries on any of above.
