We’re delighted to have the support of the National Union of Students, for this year’s Earth Hour:

“NUS is delighted to support WWF’s Earth Hour 2012. Earth Hour is a incredibly powerful way of highlighting the need for immediate action on the threats facing our planet. It demonstrates the simple actions each and every one of us can take to reduce our impact on the environment and live more sustainably. NUS will be encouraging students to join the thousands of individuals, businesses and organisations switching off for a brighter future on 31 March at 8.30pm” – Dannie Grufferty, the Vice-President of NUS for Society and Citizenship.

Here are some great ways universities can get involved this year:

  • Sign up and switch off all non-essential/signage lighting in university buildings and halls on 31 March, 8.30pm
  • Spread the word about Earth Hour through your university channels in news bulletins to staff, students and alumni, and on your university intranet and website
  • Engage your Student Union in planning an Earth Hour event, or ask your Student Newspaper to run an article on Earth Hour
  • Fundraise to support WWF’s work around the world to safeguard the environment and tackle the urgent threat of climate change

For more information on these, and other great ways to get involved with Earth Hour send us an email.

Become an Earth Hour university champion

We’re also on the hunt for motivated, enthusiastic students to promote WWF’s Earth Hour 2012 to their university. From encouraging other students to sign-up and take part, getting university buildings / local landmarks to switch-off, organising on-the-night events or promoting Earth Hour through university channels (emails, noticeboards) and social media – there’s loads you can do to get involved and help spread the word! If you’re interested in becoming an Earth Hour university champion please contact us at WWF’s UK email.

All you need is a passion for the natural world, it’s great for your CV and you’ll be helping to raise awareness of some of the biggest environmental issues facing our planet.

The issue I can see here is that most universities are on Easter break by March 31st!
